decry demagogues,
but prepare to spend your life
defending your words

Tangentially-related Update: Evidence that a certain demagogue may need better fact-checkers:

*
There’s no shortage reasons why I divested myself from the Republican party years ago. For most of the time since, I have been a man without a party. I just have a hard time subjugating my independent thought process to any party machine. And though the idiocy on the right is often amplified by the voices of people like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, etc., I’m no more willing to surrender my mind to left wing party lines.

One recent, glaring example of idiocy is the series of episodes involving elected Republican officials who (at least initially) had the guts to call out a particular non-elected talk radio host. While it’s obvious Rush Limbaugh doesn’t even take himself that seriously, we have an entire major American political party on the brink of surrendering their agenda to him completely. Or so it would seem, given the way some of these elected officials have scurried to apologize to a glorified shock jock.

I voted (and volunteered) for President Obama, but I still saw the very real cult of personality in the way some people mindlessly followed him — with no rational understanding of why they followed. But I don’t know if that comes close to being as stupid as creating a similar cult in pursuit of a radio entertainer.

Somewhere in the mountain of commentary about this situation, I heard someone compare the GOP to “a rudderless ship.” I couldn’t agree more, but beyond that, this seems like just one more piece of evidence that the U.S. two-party system is a willfully dysfunctional mechanism. And maybe that’s the real rudderless vessel.
