new experiences

graffiti artist

The past few weeks have been filled with all manner of virgin territory for me. As depicted in the photograph above, I was recently invited by the creative geniuses at iFractal to put a hand-painted haiku on their graffiti wall. My dalliance with painting on corporate office walls happened only three days after my first ever speaking engagement, and was followed just a week later with the launch of my analog impulse note cards.

Starting with the picture in the middle of it all, I sometimes find myself wishing I worked somewhere a lot more like iFractal. The way Frank Roche and Sarah Chambers nurture and retain great talent is evidence they know what they’re talking about when they advise other companies on HR and internal communication. It seems like every time I’m fortunate enough to stop in for a visit, I come away feeling energized and just that much more creatively-charged.

Then there was the speaking engagement, where I addressed a group of about twenty folks on the benefits of journaling and expressive writing. I was as nervous going into that as I would be picking up the paint brush at iFractal, but it came off surprisingly well, with an audience that was both receptive and engaging. For a few moments afterward it was going to my head a bit, and I was contemplating a speaking career. Or on second thought, maybe not.

Finally, the most absorbing few weeks of my recent life eased up just a tiny bit as I finally mailed out the last of the analog impulse pre-orders last Friday. There were many great people who supported the launch — not just financially, but logistically and morally. In short, I’m blessed to have people who so readily believe in what I’m doing.

Things have been a little tight, but they’ve also been exciting. I’d like to just offer a brief, but sincere thank you to all the folks who made these things possible, from the note card investors and advisers to my modest Tuesday evening audience to the incredible staff at an HR firm that practices what it preaches.

Now I’m looking forward to the new territory ahead.
